About

How I got to wanting IT support and Linux administration - and what I carry from my current job into that role.

Self-taught in programming, with a DevOps and systems focus. Target role: helpdesk, IT support or junior Linux administration - where system precision meets working with people.

02 / Path

  1. 01

    Self-taught

I taught myself programming: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, plus React and Next.js. I ship real work - sites that are live in production - not only tutorial exercises.

  2. 02

    Systems and observability

In parallel I am building skill in Linux, Bash/Shell, Grafana, the ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) and Prometheus. I care about how systems run, where they fail, and how that shows up in logs and metrics - and the different ways to get them running again.

  3. 03

    RHCSA - in progress

I am actively preparing for the Red Hat Certified System Administrator exam. This is not completed certification - it is the next step I am working through now.

03 / Current role

What I carry from Mercator

Mercator · Retail salesperson

I currently work at Mercator as a salesperson. That is not a footnote next to a technical CV - it is daily practice in communication, responsibility and working under pressure, which transfers directly into helpdesk and user support.

  • Direct communication

I speak with customers every day: questions, complaints, clear explanations. Helpdesk work asks for the same - calm, understandable, and followed through.

  • Work under pressure

Till, queue, high tempo. I keep a clear head and do not pass the stress on to the person in front of me.

  • Teamwork

A shift only works if we rely on each other. The same is true for IT support on a rota or on call.

  • Responsibility and precision

Handling cash and the till requires reliability and attention to detail. Mistakes show. The same is true for system changes and incident notes.

  • Working with people

Positive energy and ease with people. A user in trouble needs someone who can listen and explain - not only a command in the terminal.
